What if I Don’t Have Dental Insurance?

I highly believe that not having dental insurance should not stop you from seeking and receiving professional oral care. Please don’t get discouraged if you’re in this boat—there are many resources out there to help people get treatment at affordable costs.

The truth is, even people with dental insurance don’t always make the commitment to get routine professional treatment and care. If you’re willing to dig around in your local area, here are the best dentist-approved non-insurance options to explore:

  1. Look into county- or community-run clinics that offer pro bono services. Many of these comprehensive not-for-profit services are completely free, if you’re eligible—or they offer sliding scale rates. Check with your local authority to see what’s available.
  2. Schedule an appointment with a dental school, which provides services at reduced fees. Many metropolitan areas have a dental school of their own. These treatments are provided by dental students, who are supervised by faculty.
  3. Look at dental offices that offer an in-office membership plan. It’s not insurance, but you pay a few hundred dollars per year in order to receive some free cleanings and exams, and reduced-price services.
  4. Use CareCredit or Lending Club. These are private companies that offer medical financing options—essentially, you can use credit to help pay for your dental treatment over time. There is minimal to no penalty if you make payments on time.

And finally, keep your mouth clean and healthy! If you don’t want to pay a lot for dental care, put yourself in a position where you don’t need a lot of dental treatment. Brush twice a day, floss at least once a day, and avoid acidic and sugary foods. This goes for everyone, regardless of insurance status. Take good preventative care of your teeth and gums, and you’ll avoid more pain—financial or physical—in the long run.
